Choosing a New Mattress – Spring Versus Foam Mattresses

If you are looking to buy a new mattress then you are probably inundated with choice. With virtually every mattress brand claiming to be the “best” and claiming to offer you a better night’s sleep its hard to know whom to believe. While brands differ from brand to brand, its the actual type of mattress that I want to discuss here. here are essentially 2 types of mattress choices – foam and spring mattresses and each one have unique benefits.
Spring mattresses by far the most popular and have been around for quite some time. Its essentially a series of springs fixed to a wooden base with a soft top. The springs are designed to offer support and some of the more sophisticated models have special springs that can adapt to your body weight. Finding the right mattress for you is all about finding the correct levels of firmness. A firm mattress usually has more rigid springs and/or a more form top layer.
Foam mattresses are very different from their spring counterparts. Instead of being made of different layers, its basically a solid piece of foam. The type of foam is the most important choice here. With dozens of choices, the best is probably latex and visco memory foam. These are much firmer and don’t lose their shape. It also has many other benefits like being hypo-allergenic and providing better support for your back.
The lifetime of a mattress is a very important consideration. in general foam mattresses are more expensive, but they have a much longer lifespan. they are resistant to dust mites and mold and while springs tend to lose their shape, memory foam holds its shape and its support.

Camper Trailer Mattress & The Selection Process
A camper trailer mattress is a great way to add comfort to your next camping trip. But as you probably already know, the decision can be quite a confusing one. With a plethora of different styles, a range of different brands and then a choice in sizes to make things even more complex – how do you know which mattress is right for you?
Let’s have a look at a few of these factors and see if we can narrow your search down so that you can buy one for yourself.
1. Different Camper Trailer Mattress Styles
Have you seen the new air mattresses that have a metal fold-out base? It is options like this, and the new ones that have built in air pillows that make our decisions tough. Do we want a mattress with all the bells and wistles, or are we looking to rough it with the basic foam option?
Where are you go? What are your plans? How much room do you have in your car to fit objects? These are all questions that will help you make a decision.
2. Different Trailer Mattress Sizes
The normal camper trailer comes with a space for a double or queen size mattress – so these would be the obvious choice. However, you could also fit one or two single mattresses in the same space, so it all comes down to what you personally want.
Mattress thickness is something else that you will want to consider.
3. Mattress Brands
The final option you need to look at is the brand of of your camper trailer mattress. Just with the diversity in styles there is just as much difference in brands. Is it important to go with a known brandname or is cheaper the better option?
Well good quality is normally associated with the known brand names, so if you are going to be sleeping on the mattress on a regular basis then I would invest the money into a quality camper mattress. However, if you are only camping on the odd weekend each year – then a cheaper air mattress might be a wiser decision.
Have a look at them, use your judgement and consider calling on the expertise of store workers because the experience that they have is sure to help make an informed decision.

How to Buy a Mattress
It is only natural for people to spend a lot of time choosing which mattress to buy. After all, a night’s rest depends on how comfortable you are in your sleep. Therefore, it requires a lot of thinking and scrutiny before buying a mattress because, this time, it already involves the quality of sleep.
Learn how to buy a mattress with the following tips:
- Knowing what you want from a mattress is one of the basic steps in how to buy a mattress. You should beforehand set expectations of the mattress that you want to have so that when you buy, you will not be confused what to choose especially with the wide array of mattresses to choose from.
- Buy for quality and not for the price. It is only but natural to be attracted at first to those stores that sell mattresses at a cheaper price. There is nothing wrong with this in the first place. However, one should take into consideration to go first with quality than the price. Remember, it is more practical and wiser to buy an expensive mattress that is in good quality and long lasting, than to buy something that is cheaper but can easily be worn out.
- Trust only well-established shops and renowned brands. Shopping at a reputable dealer will not only assure you of a better mattress, it is also educational. Stores such as those have well-trained sales persons who can assist you in choosing the right mattress and who can give you the right information about the mattresses their store is selling.
- Research online on good mattress brands and on what other consumers have to say on some of their products. This can give the buyer an idea how to buy a mattress and where to buy good qualities of mattress. Browsing the internet with reviews and testimonials about a certain brand of mattress can also be enlightening to you as a buyer because these feedbacks can serve as guides what brand to choose and where to buy it.
- Inspect, firsthand, the quality of the mattress. Accordingly, lifting the corners of the mattress to feel its weight is one way in checking its quality. The heavier the mattress, the more seemingly durable its coils are because, this explains, that the “heaviness” of the mattress is caused by the abundant number its coils with heavy gauge wires. Checking on the durability and the support system that the mattress has is also another way of looking into its quality.
- And since mattress involves sleeping, it is important upon shopping for mattress to choose something that is very comfortable. Some people find firm and solid mattress to be more comfortable than the soft ones, while some people opted to have the soft ones especially those that conform with their sleeping positions.
- Another method of how to buy a mattress is to look for those mattress dealers that offer warranties. Warranties are very essential because this will not only save you from the agonizing discomfort of an easily damaged mattress, but also it will save the huge bucks of money that you had paid just to have the mattress.
Mattress Comparisons
Recently we talked about “How to Choose the Right Mattress for your Back.” (Link last blog post here) I was in the market for a new mattress myself and those were important things to consider when trying to figure which one will work best.
I tested at least ten different mattresses before choosing the product for me. Let’s discuss a few of those here. Before we get to the brands, first we must discuss mattress type:

This data, as well as some of the data to follow comes from www.sleeplikethedead.com. This site has compiled a database of over 9,000 reviews from manufacturers’ sites, consumer sites as well as from actual owners.
Air beds are not those blow up mattresses you use for the kids or guests. They are the main support in this style mattress and the firmness can be adjusted to personal preference. A dual-chambered bed allows each person to choose their own level of firmness. The main brands here are Sleep Number and Comfortaire.
Latex mattresses have independent cell construction that helps your partner sleep if you toss and turn a lot. These mattresses are extremely heavy and can trap your body temperature for a warm night.
Memory foam mattresses are made from just that, but you must be aware of the foam density. The characteristics of the bed are dictated by this.
Now let’s see the results by brand. Each of these brands had a sample size of at least 80:

Some of the mattresses I tested, such as the Heavenly Bed or the Stearns and Foster Memory Foam Mattress did not have a large enough sample size to make the above list.
Ultimately, I chose the Simmons Beautyrest Newberry extra firm mattress. I realized during this process that I do not like pillow top mattresses, but the plush on top of the very firm works for me.
Remember, there are many factors that go into picking a mattress and each is based on the individual. Think about which way you sleep, where the discomfort is, if any and what you are looking for. This is not something you should settle for. Proper rest is just as important as proper nutrition and exercise.
