Mattress Guaranty

Unlike the mattress’s manufacturer’s warranty, the guaranty, if one exists, is established by the retail store.  Retailer guaranties vary from store to store.  A guaranty is a return policy stating that you can return the mattress to the store if you are unhappy or uncomfortable.  You most likely will only find these guarantees in the larger chains or stores.  Forget about it when dealing with the mattress classified ad companies.  The importance of the guaranty will vary by person, so consider for yourself whether or not there is a chance you would use it.  Also, what will it cost you?  There are some return guaranties that will only reimburse you for the cost of half of the new replacement mattress.  Considering this scenario, many people would not put any value in that guaranty.  Think about it:  they are saying that you will pay the 100% of the price of the mattress, and if you don’t like it, you’ll pay 150%  of the price for a different one (since you already bought the first one).  Most people would put their best effort into finding a good mattress the first time.

Why Does this Problem Exist?

Why Does this Problem Exist?

Some will point to mattress trade laws enacted in the 1970’s that prohibit manufacturers from setting a price floor.  A price floor is a minimum selling price.  The reason for a price floor set by a manufacturer is to keep profits high for their resellers, which helps keep profits high for the manufacturer.

With the new law, many discount mattress retailers opened up and undercut the big department stores.  Naturally, the department stores were not happy about this so they started to negotiate with the manufacturers.  The outcome of this was for the manufacturers to provide “exclusive” models to the department stores, to set them aside from the discount retailers.  These “exclusivity” deals eventually spread and have lead to the very unique situation we have today were just about every retailer sells exclusive models, completely snuffing the ability for a consumer to comparison shop.

Mattress Ratings

Mattress Ratings are not very important to the mattress shopper.  Unfortunately, the shopper must go out and deal with the mattress salesman since a mattress feels different to each person, and only the person shopping for one can decide.

Comparison-shopping is an excellent means of getting the best possible deal for a given product.  But what if you can’t comparison shop?  What if an industry is setup specifically to avoid comparison-shopping by the consumer?  Welcome to the wonderful Mattress Industry!  “Typically, I learn more as I shop more.  When shopping for a mattress, the more I shopped, the more confused I became.” says one recent mattress shopper.

The confusion is not without merit.  Take, for example, what a typical consumer might be thinking before going out on that Saturday afternoon to “shop around” for a new mattress.  Maybe they’ve lined up a few mattress discount outlets, and then they’ll hit the department stores.  They have a price range in mind and swear they wont let the sales associate persuade them to budge from it.   The first mattress discount store has a large variety of potential new resting pads for the savvy shopper, and they have narrowed it down to a few makes and models within the price range.  They are able to wrestle their way out of the grips of the sales force (more on this later) and off to the next stop they go.
